Honour you Father & Mother, this is the First Commandment with a Promise

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT TEXT: Exodus 20:12 'Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. The first table of the four commandments was respect unto God, now the second table is respect unto man. I) Father is of different kinds a) The political father; the magistrate. He is the father of his country. - They deserve honor. Political fathers preserve order and harmony in a nation. - Kings have been promoted by God to give justice to the nation. - There are spiritual fathers , as pastors and ministers. 1 Corinthians 4:15. They should be honoured. How? 1. By giving them respect. 2. By becoming advocates for them. 1 Timothy 5:19 3. Conform to their doctrines ( teachings) 2 Corinthians 3:1 4. He is pater familias, 'the father of the family' 2Kings 5:13 II) Children are to show honour to their parents by; - Inwardly by fear mixed with love - Reverence must be shown to parents outwardly, both in word and gesture. a) In word; speak with respect. 1 kings 2: 20 b) In gesture; being submissive by uncovering the head, bending the knee 1Kings2:19 - Hearkening to their instructions. Proverbs 1:8 - Complying with the parents command. Col 3:20 - Relieve your parents from their wants in old age. III) How should parents act towards their children as to be honoured and reverenced by them? - Be careful to bring them up in the fear and nature of the Lord. Eph. 4:4 - Keep up parental authority: be kind not spoiling them. 1 Kings 1:6-7 ( David spoilt Adonija) - Provide your children what is fitting both in their minority and maturity. Eph.5:29. - When children are grown up, put them to some lawful calling to serve their generation. - Show love to your children, for the child is the father/ mother in the second edition. - Act prudently towards your children. Don't provoke them to anger. Col 3:21 IV) How parents provoke their children - Giving them opprobrious terms 1 Samuel 20:30. David rebuked Jonathan. - Striking children without a cause, or correction exceeding the fault. 1Sam 20:33-34 - Denying children what is absolutely needful for them. - Acting partially towards your children. Genesis 37:3-4 ( Jacobs love to Joseph the son) - Failing to set a good example towards your children, you are a mirror of your child to look. - When you lay unlawful commands to your children that causes harm. 1 Sam 20:31 - Failing to pray for them.
